MEET THE MAKER

I am a maker of hand pulled prints and textiles for people to use and enjoy.

I see myself as more of an artisan maker than an artist, although most of my projects start with a drawing; a skill that I value highly. I have been printmaking over the past 18 years using collagraphs, monotypes, monoprints and line etching, while being a member of a printing group, but my love of lino started way back in my O-level art room. Having recently given up my day job, I wanted to explore mixing textiles and printing to make useful objects for people to treasure. I have always had a weakness for beautiful fabrics and particularly enjoy working with linens, silks, fine cottons, and velvets. Printing on these fabrics gives different effects, which adds another dimension to the uncertainty of printmaking, but one that can bring interest and variety. Free motion embroidery and applique are other techniques I like to use to create more texture and colour in my projects. With both printmaking and free motion embroidery, your work responds to the materials you are using, changing the results and evolving your original idea. There are endless possibilities and I have only just started. There is still so much to learn and you never really know how things will turn out which is all part of the fun!

My works and makes are mostly inspired by nature, the countryside, and the ancient Devon lanes.

When somebody buys something that I have created I feel so lucky to be able to make things that people like and enjoy. Thank you for visting my website today.

News Letters

 2024

I hope you have had a good year and that 2024 has been kind to you and your families.

It has been a busy year for makerslane.uk. Starting with my third year of doing the 30-day sketchbook challenge in January, which happily led to a few new prints using Tetra Pak. Some of these have sold and are hanging in other people’s houses.

I have taken part in lots of different markets and have met so many lovely people with stories to tell. Some very sad, some happy and others that reveal coincidences that make the world feel very small. One of the last ones was a lady buying a small red velvet Christmas decoration from me, in the shape of a small bag with an embroidered heart on it, which she was going to put something in to propose to her partner!

Earlier in the year I was so pleased to take part in an exhibition with the lovely Maggie Smith at Mothecombe Gardens, one of my favourite places and be involved in the Impressions exhibition In Kingsbridge with so many great printmakers from Press Gang Printmakers. I popped up in Thurlestone along with a group of makers and artists from South Hams Arts Forum in August. It was quickly followed by Devon Open Studios at the Art House South Brent quickly followed by the South Hams Arts Trail at Avon Mill. Being part of all these events was a privilege and so inspiring to be amongst such varied creatives.

One of the events that started the Christmas markets was the Green Maker Sale at Make Southwest. It was a different event for me as I was helping people to print paper bookmarks with one of their presses as well as selling. It was great to see people’s faces as they revealed their print.

Alongside these events I have been proud to continue to have some of my work in Artworks, South Brent and Me and East, Totnes.

Christmas is now fast approaching, and the days are starting to draw out. I have signed up for the 2025 30-day sketch book challenge and I am now looking forward to working on my drawing and printing skills while planning the year ahead in January.

Happy Christmas to you and your families and thank you to all the people who have supported my small enterprise with kind words, encouragement, interest and recognition of the work and time that goes into the things I make.

Best wishes for 2025.

Becca
